Sleep is very important to the health of our bodies. Sleep is an opportunity for the body to rejuvenate and repair itself. It enables us to function and concentrate on our daily tasks. However, more and more people are not receiving an adequate amount of sleep. A lack of sleep can have many side effects towards the health of the human body.
The following are the results that can happen due to a lack of sleep:
Periods of drowsiness:
During the day you will experience periods of where your energy levels will fall. This most commonly happens in the afternoon or soon after having lunch. If you work in an office that is warm and stuffy with little ventilation this will encourage these symptoms of drowsiness. Drowsiness can affect your awareness and ability to focus for any length of time on a specific task.
Weakened immune system:
A lack of sleep can weaken the immune system which makes the body more open to attack from infections and viruses. In this way you are a more prone to catching colds and flus.
Increase in weight:
A lack of sleep increases your hunger especially for foods that are high in sugar and refined carbohydrates. These types of foods have no nutritional value and the body can quickly covert the sugar to fat. These foods also cause the body's blood sugar levels to become erratic.
Lack of motivation:
With feelings of exhaustion a lack of sleep can affect you motivation levels. This can lead to a sense of apathy and lethargy towards the work that you need to do and making you less productive.
Mood changes:
When you are exhausted due to sleep loss your moods change. You become more moody, grumpier and irritable. The ability to control your temper in stressful situations becomes less effective. The other downside of mood swings is that you become more erratic and unapproachable which can have a negative effect on your relationships with other people.
Lack of concentration:
A lack of sleep affects your ability to concentrate and focus on certain tasks. While driving a car a lack of concentration this can lead to road accidents or costly business decisions.
Lower productivity levels:
Sleep deprivation affects the body's cognitive functions. These include the ability to make decisions, to remember information, to coordinate tasks, the ability to analysis complex data. Lack of sleep These functions give us less efficient and effective.
