During the pre-game warmup many hockey coaches do not know how to effectivly warm-up their team. Many coaches do drills where the players will shoot on a goalie or pass to their teammates. I do not believe these drills effectively warm up a team. I prefer the drills that get all the kids skating and the goalie being warmed up.
When you are picking a drill to use in pre-game make sure that you are following to crucial rules.
Game
1) Get the kids loose
2) Get the goalie warmed-up and ready
You can tackle both of these objectives at the same time.
The best drill that coaches use is to have the kids sprint from side board to side board and back while a coach warms-up the goalie.
By doing this the kids are getting their legs loose and are not standing around waiting for their turn. All players are skating and are getting warmed up at the same time.
Many other coaches prefer to have the kids shoot on the goalie and pass to each other before the game starts. The problem with this is the basic math. When two kids are doing a drill at a time the other 13 are standing still. This means that a kid will only be warming up for about 15 percent of the warm-up time. That ends up being about a thirty second warmup for each kid.
However, when you have all the kids skating at the same time they are all getting a 3 minute warm-up that will make them ready for the game.
