Can't Miss Batting Practice
We decided to leave home at 2:30 so we could see the batting practice at the 2010 All Star baseball game before the game. There were several home runs hit. The fans were catching home run balls all afternoon.
Game
The media from Fox sports had booths set up on the perimeter of the field. They were conducting interviews with different officials from the All-Star game.
Don't Forget Pins Hats and Jerseys
Vendors were offering 2010 All-Star memorabilia. They were offering everything from All-Star pins, All-Star hat, All-Star team jerseys with the All-Star logo on them.
The Opening Ceremonies
It wasn't long before the stream of flag bearers filed out onto the field carrying the enormous full size field flag. The All-Star sound equipment was then put in place. It's always a frustration of mine at the way the sound is not synced with the stadium speakers. That was the only drawback to the opening ceremonies that I could see.
MLB SUpports 30 Charities
Each All-Star team chose a charity to represent their city and state. It was called The All-Stars among Us. You can find a full list of those charities by clicking the picture above. They're pretty amazing. Several of the charities dealt with animal therapy for children suffering from severe diseases to autism. It is quite a moving moment when the players huddled around the different charity leaders and interacted with them for several minutes.
The National Anthem was sung by a star from the hit Fox Show called Glee. At the end of the National Anthem there was a flyover from the Naval Air Station by four Hornets in formation. Then Angel Stadium shot off red, white and blue aluminum streamers all over the field.
Short Game Summary
The game then began. In the process of the game, there was a tribute to George Steinbrenner who died a couple days before the game. He was the owner of the Yankees and is credited for the success of his team over the years. Through his leadership, they have become a dominant force in baseball.
I was fairly convinced that the American League would win the All-Star game because its batting averages were so much higher than the National League's. But as everyone knows in baseball anything can happen at any time. There were several outstanding plays, diving catches, long balls hit to the outfield and a couple double plays. But nothing compared to the double hit by McCann later in the game that scored three runs. At the end of the game he was nominated as the MVP.
MLB Adds Something New To The All Star Game
There was a new aspect to the All-Star game that was added this year. The winner of the game whether it was National League or American League would have home-field advantage in the 2010 World Series.
This game was historic because the National League had not won an All-Star game in 14 years. This was the National League's year to win and they did. The final score was 3 to 1.
Anaheim Stadium is well known for its fireworks and geysers every time a home run is hit but there were no home runs so there were no fireworks until after the game was over.
My Personal Soap Box
The only controversy in the game seems to have come from New York. There is a group of people in New York that were protesting the Arizona immigration law that's going into effect in a couple days. Phoenix Arizona is the site of the next All-Star game. I personally feel that politics should stay out of sports.
Even though the 2010 All-Star game had fewer viewers than ever on television, baseball is still the American pastime. This was a once-in-a-lifetime event and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Here's to next year in Phoenix.
